SUMMARY:Vermeer's "The Concert"
DESCRIPTION:Vermeer's "The Concert"\nMarch 7-8\, 2025 in the Warbeke Room\, Pratt Hall\, Mount Holyoke College\, South Hadley\nTwo performances: Friday March 7 @ 7:30pm;\nSaturday March 8 at 3 pm\nIn cooperation with the Mount Holyoke College Music Department\nSophie Michaux – voice\nDouglas Kelley – viola da gamba\nNathaniel Cox – lute and cittern\nAndrus Madsen – harpsichord \nIn 1664 Johannes Vermeer painted a domestic music scene in which a singer is joined by a harpsichordist and a lutenist\, with a viola da gamba on the floor and a bandora or a cittern on the table. (The painting was stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 1990 and has never been recovered.) This concert will be a reproduction of the music these musicians might have played\, sampling from works widely available in Rotterdam in the 1650s\, including then-popular Roman cantatas written for the instruments and voice depicted in the painting.\nThis program will be performed twice in the Warbeke Room at Mount Holyoke College\, an ideal space for this intimate repertoire. \nTicket link: Vermeer's "The Concert"

SUMMARY:West African Dance and Drumming with Rooted Essence Dance
DESCRIPTION:2025 South Hadley Cultural Council Grant Recipient.  West African Dance and Drumming from 11:00 am-noon presented by Tara Murphy of the Rooted Essence Dance Studio. Tara Murphy of the Rooted Essence Dance Studio will present a beginning West African Dance and Drumming program that will help people to learn about the basic style of West African dances from Mali\, Guinea and Senegal\, West Africa. The class emphasizes community\, self-expression and the joy of movement. Drumming is an activity that stimulates the magic and fun within people. Not only is it a proven team builder\, but many studies show how it reduces stress\, anxiety and depression. In addition\, drumming together sparks creativity and vision -- the rhythms are a powerful way for people to tap into their receptivity to new ideas. Drumming naturally uplifts people's hearts and brings people together in beautiful ways\, in a feeling of unity. \n

SUMMARY:Musings Along the Way - With Local Author Martha Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Musings Along the Way \nIn this set of books I reflect in poetry on my 11-year journey (1997- 2008) to hope and healing.  Interestingly enough\, folks grappling with the changes\, challenges and temporary despair of the world situation AND their own aging transitions\, may find them an encouraging  resource. We are not alone! \nFor me\, I was “writing for my life”  pouring out feelings which would ultimately help me heal.  I encourage anyone to respond to their tough life issues in writing\, painting\, crying and laughing.  Originally published in 2002 & 2011.     New Covers and New Forward in 2023. \nVol 1 – Tears\, Lies and Fresh Fruit Pies (1997-2001)\nVol 2 – Pain\, Persistence and Purifying Waters (2002-2008)

SUMMARY:Songs and Stories of Appalachia and Small Town America
DESCRIPTION:We bring an appreciation for small town life that will resonate with the local community. We place our songs in a historical\, folkloric context with stories and images to set the stage. We banter with one another and with our audience. But mostly we sing in the kind of tight\, high mountain harmony that comes from living and loving together for thirty years\, having met in the Valley and recently returned after 26 years as West Virginia-based folklorists\, oral historians\, and music makers. Our guitar accompaniments are also in closely arranged harmony\, with Michael’s melodic lines and Carrie’s rhythm and runs\, elevated by Joe Blumenthal on upright bass and Jim Armenti on mandolin. We specialize in songs of working people\, Appalachian songs\, and country duets of people and nature\, with a couple of country love songs woven into the mix.

SUMMARY:Marie Antoinette
DESCRIPTION:For more information or to reserve tickets\, please visit mhc.ludus.com \nThe Mount Holyoke College Department of Film Media Theater ends the 2024-25 season with a bold and inventive play by David Adjmi\, “Marie Antoinette.” \nIn Adjmi’s contemporary take on the young queen of France\, Marie is a confection created by a society that values extravagance and artifice. But France’s love affair with the royals sours as revolution brews\, and for Marie\, the political suddenly becomes very personal. From the light and breezy banter at the palace to the surging chants of “Liberté\, Egalité\, Fraternité!” in the streets\, “Marie Antoinette” holds a mirror up to our contemporary society that might just be entertaining itself to death. \nThis production is directed by Mariana Considine ‘25. Set Design by Vannessa James\, Costume Design by Jensen Glick\, Lighting Design by Sam Skynner\, and Sound Design by Gillian Tomlinson ‘25.
